In this type of shelving, uprights are built by connecting two legs to form either a row ending unit or "angle" (L) or connecting tee upright (T). Uprights are either "open", that is with just three steel bands that connect the legs, or "closed", where the legs are connected by a full height steel panel. Most engineers require "closed" uprights to meet seismic codes. The uprights come in various widths and heights and allow for building rows of connected sections. Double rivet cross members support the shelves and snap into slots in the upright legs. Either steel or particle board shelves may be used.
