In this type of shelving, uprights are built by connecting two legs to form either a row ending unit or "angle" (L) or connecting tee upright (T). Uprights are either "open", that is with just three steel bands that connect the legs; or "closed", where the legs are connected by a full height steel panel. Most engineers require "closed" uprights to meet seismic codes. The uprights come in various widths and heights and allow for building rows of connected sections. Double rivet cross members support the shelves and snap into slots in the upright legs.
In filing applications, slotted steel shelves are used. When double sided shelves are used (ie: 36"x24") a center stop divides each into two 12" deep sides and also serves to support file dividers. For single deep shelving, a back stop is used to support dividers. A minimum of two file dividers are recommend on each side of each shelf, to keep files from creeping behind the corner posts.
